The Western Nebraska Community College Lady Cougars dribbled past the Northwest College Trappers to the semifinals of the Region IX Tournament at Scottsbluff with with an overtime score of 74-70.

Starting with a 10-4 lead in the first quarter, the Lady Cougars set the challenging course of the game for the Northwest Trappers. With the goal of advancing to the semifinals, the Lady Cougars rebounded between points during the second and third quarters.

Towards the end of the third quarter, the Lady Cougars regained their starting momentum and tied at the end of the fourth quarter with the Northwest Trappers with a score of 62-62.

With the additional five minutes of overtime, the Lady Cougars persevered with 12 points winning the quarterfinal game against the Northwest.

Zeynep Canbaz, sophomore from Turkey said, “Through the course of the game we expected to win so we put our best on the floor, especially in the fourth quarter.”

Although victorious, the Lady Cougars agree that their playing was not exactly what they expected.

“We didn’t play very well tonight, but at the end of the game we ended up victorious and we can get ready for tomorrow [the semifinals against Gillette],” said Chad Gibney, WNCC women’s interim head hoach.

“Tomorrow we play against Gillette, this will be the third time we play them,” said Bree Paulson, sophomore from Broomfield, Colorado. “Definitely it will another hard game tomorrow.”

The Lady Cougars have the goal on advancing to the national tournament in Lubbock, Texas.

Sladjana Rakovic, sophomore from Montenegro, said, “It is nice to be able to play another semifinal.” “Hopefully, this year we will go to finals and win the championship.”

Overall for the season, Gibney said, “It’s been a great season, we are hoping to kind of put the cherry on top here in the couple of days.”
